Generator Transfer Switches done right

A transfer switch lets you run your house on a generator without sending power back out onto the utility lines. After Winter Storm Fern in January 2026, Duck River Electric (DREMC) publicly warned members about the danger of generator backfeed. Positive Currents installs all three common types: manual transfer switches, interlock kits, and automatic transfer switches for standby generators. Shawn will help you pick the one that fits your generator and your home.

  • Manual transfer switches: you plug in a portable generator and flip the selected circuits over to generator power by hand
  • Interlock kits: a mechanical lockout on your main panel that keeps the main breaker and generator breaker from being on at the same time
  • Automatic transfer switches (ATS): for standby generators, they sense an outage and switch your home to generator power on their own, then switch back when utility power returns
  • Generator inlet and wiring from the generator to your panel

Every job comes with a 1-year warranty on labor, and estimates are free.

Common questions

Why do I need a transfer switch?

Plugging a generator into a house without one can backfeed power onto the utility lines, which puts line workers and neighbors at risk. DREMC warned about generator backfeed during Winter Storm Fern. A transfer switch keeps your generator and the grid separated.

Which type is right for me?

It depends on your generator and what you want to run. Manual switches and interlock kits are common with portable generators; automatic transfer switches go with standby generators. Shawn can walk you through it during a free estimate.
